Gold rose on Thursday with a retreat in the dollar arresting the slide, though moves were muted as markets await the outcome of the looming French presidential election. The yellow metal settled up 0.19 percent at $1,281.35 an ounce. Silver closed 0.44 percent lower at $18.00 an ounce.
